To Sir With Love.....

It's almost two weeks now since we attended a very special and highly emotive Mass, followed by a party in a very posh house, to wish a lovely, charismatic man well in his retirement. Yes, our beloved and extremely supportive school principal, Mr C has now officially retired.

It is safe to say that there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Many eloquent words were spoken on the night by people more eloquent than I. Some of his co-workers, including the incoming new principal Mr H,  spoke so highly and eloquently about him as did two guests in the congregation. Mary Hanafin, who gives a very amusing speech at Panto-time each year, gave her usual clever repartee. She was preceded by our local politician Eamon Gilmore, who's children also attended the school and who gave an equally clever and amusing speech! Both of course were hilariously upstaged by our Panto Dame who made a special appearance on the night! Oh yes she did!

There really isn't much else I can say about this man that hasn't already been said. However I really feel the need to devote a post to him to express how his passion for education, children and inclusion has had a huge impact on our lives.

Come and meet our illustrious Mr C....

As I've already said he is a man passionate about education, the children (and the special children) and he is also just as passionate about The Blues, BB King and Elvis Presley!

He works hard for the children, the school and the community at large and always has an eye on the bigger picture.

Inclusion for Mr C doesn't just apply to the special children, oh no. It extends to all areas of the school and the greater community including providing support for the local Tidy Towns and Scan Magazine, to name but two examples.

He has adorned the corridor walls with pictures of the children involved in momentous occasions and also with copies of very newsworthy items, usually of historic value, appearing in newspapers.

He is a fun guy who sends you funny jokes by text and whose ringtone on his phone is a jazzy little number....    I always feel the need to dance when I hear that phone going off when I'm in his office! A real ice-breaker I would think, if at a difficult meeting!

He is also likely to send you a text when least expected, telling you where he is and what he's doing....it usually involves climbing a mountain or two and having a well earned glass of red!

Mr C is a very, very VERY busy man who has to organise himself well to get jobs done. However he is so busy that he doesn't have time to access a computer, choosing instead to rely on his good ole faithful manual computer..... his Clipboard!! Seriously! It is a very effective system too, I must say and prompted the lead picture for this post!

As terribly busy as the man is he always makes time for you. His door is always open.

Mr C co-founded the Panto with our Panto Dame 15 years ago, so I guess it's fair to say that he's passionate about Panto too. He has taken an onstage role in every production..... except this one :-(

I have been involved, in one way and another, in most of the Panto productions and it is through Panto that I have gotten to know him.

It was through Panto that I decided that any child of mine would attend this school. This decision was based on two events that resonated strongly with me.

I distinctly remember in the very first panto I did, when WiiBoy wasn't even a twinkle in anyone's eye, being in the dressing room classroom alone with him whilst everyone else was on stage. We had a fascinating conversation in which he waxed lyrical about English, reading and educating the children.

The second event occurs every year, when I see this bearded Principal willing to take to the stage in whatever costume his role dictates. A bear? A Giant? An Ape? A ...Nurse? No problem for the all inclusive Mr C!

Then to see the response he gets from the children in the audience....and the subsequent respect these performances elicit the very next day from the same children, as he passes through the school corridors,  is absolutely astounding.

Who wouldn't want their child to attend a school led by such an all embracing Principal?

Soon after that decision was made by me, our beloved WiiBoy made his appearance into our lives!

For obvious reasons my dream of  my child attending this school was not to be......initially.

By this time I could consider Mr C to be a friend.

True friends are honest.

I approached him and asked about the possibility of WiiBoy attending the school. At this stage we had just received a diagnosis and we're trying to find the right placement for him.

My friend took one look at my child running (constantly running) and screaming through the corridors at a Panto rehearsal and bluntly, yet respectively, told me no.

An honest friend indeed.

Shortly after that the same honest friend arranged, from his hospital bed, to have WiiBoy assessed by one of the teachers.

That teacher said no too.

And that decision was the one that pushed us into attending the special school and in the process opened many doors for us. For that we are truly grateful.

One of those doors opened was the door to our principal's school within 12 months.

Which only goes to prove that Mr C's door is always open.

Even when it's (seemingly) closed.

It also goes to prove that he always puts the children first.

Especially the special children.

So, thank you Mr C. You have achieved a lot in your illustrious career that you can be proud of and our case is just one more!

You once told me that you tell everyone you meet about our success story. Let me remind you what I said in reply...that I always tell everyone I meet about you and your inclusive school ;-)

You may now hang up your clipboard and go forth into your retirement Mr C, secure in the knowledge that you have served a school and it's wider community well over your 38 years.

We shall miss you hugely in school matters....as your door was always open.

We shall miss you greatly in Panto matters. Who will help us when we run into difficulty and. more importantly.... who will help us run amok keep us under control at the wrap party??!!

Not to worry. You have left us in very capable hands ;-)

So, from the Jazzys to the Jazz Man......

Slan go foill a chara,
 Eiri an bothar leat
Agus dul na cnoic éasca ar ort!

And don't forget to send us a text now and then ;-)

A Magical Christmas...

Last year I wrote a Christmas post highlighting the thorny issues around creating Christmas traditions and where we all spend our Christmas Day. It struck a familiar chord with some of you.

This year I was adamant that our little family would continue creating our own traditions.

This year I actually followed my own advice. For a change.

The first thing I did was to stick to my guns and made the very early decision that we were having Christmas Day at home. Mr Jazzy was in total agreement.

We invited my mam and I immediately put the Acceptance Rule I devised last year into play.

I accepted that she may or may not be well enough to attend. No guilt allowed.

I accepted that, as a result of the snow, some food items (and small presents)  were unable to be purchased. No stress allowed.

I accepted that we'd no honey to mix with brown sugar and glaze the ham with. A fact I didn't discover until late Christmas Eve! So what, who needs honey? Although no doubt it's not culinarily correct,  there was Golden Syrup in the cupboard so I used that instead!! It worked out fine too... the ham was gorgeous!

So far so good.

As promised I continued the Christmas Tree tradition started last year and Mr Jazzy and WiiBoy went off to purchase our tree again this year. Once more they chose a beauty! Which I thoroughly enjoyed decorating.

Whilst my Christmas tradition of yore (visiting the pub on Christmas Eve) has long since been discontinued, our current adult one of going to our local pub's Christmas night out thankfully continues. Wouldn't miss that night for anything, we had a lovely time :-)

The aforementioned snow did create some difficulties, of course. Panto rehearsals were canceled and school holidays were granted three days early. The former made me momentarily panic (I'm over it...acceptance, right?!) and the latter made WiiBoy very happy, as this meant he didn't have to go to school on his birthday which was on the 22nd December!

As far as I'm concerned it was the snow that put the magic into this year's Magical Christmas.

As far as I can recall  it was our first proper White Christmas and I loved that!

I loved going to Midnight Mass (another tradition started last year) on Christmas Eve in the snow. Don't worry, WiiBoy wasn't up that late....in Ireland Midnight Mass is at 8.00pm! It was gorgeous.

I loved looking out at it when WiiBoy had gone to bed on Christmas Eve night. It was just like every Christmas movie I've ever seen. Oh, what I would have given as a child, to have looked out my window on Christmas Eve. Eyes scanning the sky over the snow clad rooftops, searching for Santa in his sleigh.

I'm big into creating memories so I do hope WiiBoy recalls the White Christmas we've just experienced.

Christmas tradition in this house dictates that Santa presents are unwrapped and left under the tree in a large Santa gift bag and the stocking is left on WiiBoy's bedroom door.

The other thing that truly put the magic into this years' Magical Christmas is the fact that WiiBoy still believes. Magical indeed.

It's only in the last couple of years that he wakes up early on Christmas Day and this year was the earliest ever! I was only in bed since 1.00am, having stayed up to cook the ham, when WiiBoy came bounding into our room at 3.00am......  he came, Santa came... he whispered loudly into my ear face, interrupting my deep sleep in the process!

We then went downstairs to see what else Santa had brought. He had brought quite a lot as it turns out!

I was recently told, by someone who knows these things, that Santa leaves an extra present under the tree for 11 year old children. A rather large helping of the dreaded teenage hormones I've been talking about.

Unfortunately that was the first present sampled this year as WiiBoy then promptly insisted  he was watching TV for a while. Being too exhausted to argue, I promptly fell asleep. Only to awake at 5.30am to find that he was still downstairs watching TV!!

Well, I tore downstairs like a demented Cruella de Vil telling him to get up them stairs forthwith!

Which did not go down well at all , as you can imagine, and a hormone-induced argument ensued. What was the point, he argued, won't be long until we'll be getting up anyway!

Naturally I wasn't having any of that and eventually we both stormed up the stairs banging our respective doors shut!

I heard him giving out and crying in his room and I felt bad, really bad. What if, after going to such lengths to create lovely memories that this argument would be his lasting memory for this year's Christmas? How awful  that would be.

Not to worry though. He fell asleep soon after and came down to me a couple of hours later and we kissed and made up!

Our Magical Christmas was back on track!

We continued on and had ourselves a lovely Christmas Day and added a few more traditions to our collection. Although many families take this for granted most of you reading this blog will not. Last year was the first year that WiiBoy ate turkey and ham and that was a piece of magic for sure. This year though was the first year that he ate Mince Pies and....wait for it.... Christmas Pudding!! Totally magical....the ASD Fairy has been sprinkling some of her wonderful fairy dust around here of late :-)

Those of you with younger fussy-eating children on the spectrum take heart....and Stay With The Programme *.  Hopefully the ASD Fairy will visit you soon too ;-)

While it may not have been a Magical Christmas a la The Waltons it was most certainly was a Magical Christmas, Jazzy style ;-)

I do hope you had a Magical Christmas too.

xx Jazzy

Note * My previous Staying With The Programme post I've linked to above is related to anger issues and self -regulation but the premise is the same. Stick with whatever programmes you have in place for your child. While only small changes may be evident at first those small stepswill eventually add up and who knows what may be possible!

A Testing Week....

Our WiiBoy has had quite a testing week, so to speak.

It started with his Taekwondo Purple Belt testing last Saturday that I told you about in my last post. As I said he did extremely well. I particularly noticed how loudly and clearly he shouted out his Yes Sirs and Yes Ma'ams and his Ki'yap's.This is very important in Taekwondo and it was something he didn't always do at tests. Sadly, not everyone passed the grading....but WiiBoy and his fellow blue belts are now the proud owners of purple belts! Or at least they will be in the new year!

Happy Days :-)

Then on Wednesday he went to Chess class. He loves Chess and only started it last September. I was vaguely aware that they were having some kind of a class tournament but I didn't realise there were medals etc. Guess who came Third? Yup! Good 'ole WiiBoy!

Happy Days :-)

Then today, he had his very first Drama exam. Now, he started Drama back in September 2009 but we agreed that last December was too early for him to do the exam, as he was still only settling into the class. It was the correct decision as he is much more settled and confident this year.

I was a little nervous about this one. It was during the school day and one never knows what's going to happen during the school day that would upset him! I didn't want him taken out of class without advance warning but that was easily rectified. He had to recite two poems and chat to the examiner....with good eye contact. Yikes!

Now, he practiced at home so I knew he knew his poems. He recited them with good intonations of voice and some projection.

He doesn't get a bit nervous you know and is quite confident in his abilities. Over-confident sometimes but hey, I sure ain't gonna burst his hard earned confidence bubbles!!

He was the first student in and came out beaming as he felt he had done very well!!

He then went back to class and honoured his fellow classmates with his animated recitations....and threw in a Taekwondo pattern for good measure!! He was brilliant, apparently!

Now, we don't know the results yet but we're quietly hopeful and will be crossing fingers and toes just in case. To be sure, like!

Oh, Happy, HAPPY Days :-)

As most of you regular readers know WiBoy does these three specifically chosen extra-curricular activities in place of lost therapies.

They seem to be working effectively ;-)

I think his involvement in Panto over the years has also helped. His behaviour and dancing skills are wonderful this year. His attention span is being greatly assisted by the fact that none of his classmates are involved! He really is quite good.

He's my Superstar!

To put the cherry on the cake of our testing week teacher tells me they had an English test yesterday. An unscheduled one. As soon as it was announced he pipes up with: But... we don't do tests on Thursdays? It was explained that... well you're doing one today. And he did. He did quite well at it too. Slower than the others but lovely writing. Did I mention it was an unscheduled test?? Yes... it was unscheduled!!

He did get a bit anxious when he saw the others finished first and lost some concentration. that's something to watch out for but we are really getting somewhere.

We had an interesting chat about him and the fact that he's such a logical child came up.

When a difficulty is explained to him it's sometimes put to him... yes, I see why you think that, you are logical... or something like that.

And I got to thinking.

That's a nice way of putting it. Not that I have a problem with the "A" word or anything (you all know that) but for the very high functioning child I kinda like that approach.

As our WiiBoy has moved along the glorious spectrum of Autism, his diagnosis has changed from ASD to PDD-nos.

Have we now moved onto a different one...... a more Logical one perhaps??

Not that I'm suggesting ditching the official diagnosis or anything. That would be just silly.

I'm just thinking ahead to secondary school. When we'll start with a clean slate. Teachers will know, supports will be in place and he probably won't have his own SNA. He won't stand out so much in this new setting. It's OK now, as this class just accept things as they are and always have been.

It will be different in this new setting, with his new hormonally-charged teenage friends..... who may or may not target anyone who is different. It might be nice for him to explain why he does things or thinks differently by simply saying: yes, I just think more logically than most.. I'm logical.

Sounds logical to me.

But then again.... maybe I'm logical too ;-)

Surviving the Shopping Madness.

Oh the silly season is upon us. It has crept up unknowingly and very suddenly it seems but here it is nonetheless. It's December already and Christmas shopping MUST be done. Surprisingly enough I've already made a start! I'm really impressed with myself. Time, like cash, is a commodity that is in very short supply for me right now so I gotta be organised and be prepared this Christmas. On both my Christmas shopping forays so far I made sure to bring some important items with me: my credit cards and my detailed shopping list!

Although I bring the cash I've saved for Christmas shopping I always bring my credit card too. Just in case. You just never know. It actually came in so handy on the very first trip! My mother needed a new coat and I saw the perfect one for her but had no spare cash. Knowing that I wouldn't have time to go back another day it was great to be able to just buy it and be done. Phew..another job off my never ending list.

The detailed shopping list is a must too. Shopping and me don't get on very well. We tolerate each other. Shopping and stores like to confuse me with lots of choices. I should NEVER be given lots of choices, it literally melts my brain! So I list suggestions for each person then I plan the shops I'm going into and exactly what 'm looking for in each one. It's working a dream so far. In fact on my second trip I managed to buy ten presents in just one hour. Now there's an exercise in time management!

Christmas is a very busy and expensive time for us here at chez Jazzy so cash as well as time must be managed wisely. Not only is it silly season but WiiBoy's birthday is a mere three days before Christmas Day! So I've allocated Christmas Present buying money and have points and cash saved for the Christmas supermarket shop. My faithful friend, Mr Credit Card, will come in handy for contribution to Santa Claus (yes...the big jolly man in the bright red suit does indeed accept plastic!) and for WiiBoy's birthday present and party. Of course it will also come in so handy for all  those unexpected purchases and meals out over the festive season. Really helps to spread the cost.

But a word of warning as you're out and about shopping in these difficult times........ mind your property.

Keep a close eye on your handbags, purses, wallets, cash and credit cards.

Ensure the shop assistants or waiting staff bring the credit card machine to you and not take it away somewhere.

Always be conscious of where you put your credit card after making a purchase, don't just absent mindedly put it away. Okay...this one is for me! I regularly do this and cause mayhem as everyone in shop gets caught up in my drama!

NEVER bring your credit card with you when you're doing your recycling.

What? You're confused about my last pointer?

Well, okay.... this one refers to me too. Not only do I involve everyone in the shop in my dramas I also...ahem....involve the recycling staff! On a recent recycling trip, when I thought (yeah, thought) I'd brought my purse containing my credit card with me, the Recycling Man got more involved then he wished. Yeah.....he ended up in the HUGE plastic recycling bin looking for my purse that I thought I'd brought with me! Poor Mr Recycling Man. He's a lovely guy, very helpful. In fact he's been involved in our missing dog dramas too! After numerous phone calls I finally found the purse at home! About five minutes after I'd made the call to cancel the credit card!!

Sod's Law eh?.

Should be renamed Jazzy's Law.

Think I've earned that title after all my antics to date!

Learn from these antics of mine Dear Readers.

And mind your your bags and credit cards this Christmas ;-)

Happy shopping!!

A Jazzy Update....

All has been hectic at Chez Jazzy of late and I have not been my usual Social Media Butterfly self. I could tell you that I'm suffering from Social Media withdrawal symptoms but that would be simply untrue. The fact is I'm simply too run off my feet to feel anything! So forgive me for not being as socially interactive of late.

My days have been a flurry of panto rehearsals that sees me up at the school for 11 hours a week (preparation time at home not included!) Mad shopping forays - shop 'n' grab forays in reality - as I do everyone's Christmas shopping for them and vague house-cleaning attempts that are really the proverbial cat's lick. And somewhere in the midst of all that, having been snowbound for the best part of a week, my mother needs visiting and WiiBoy needs the Mum-Taxi.

Sigh.....

However, we've also managed to fit in some fun events...... in our spare time like.

Last week's snowfall caused havoc in Ireland with school closures, serious reduction in public transport and curtailment of extra curricular activity. And by the latter I mean adult extra curricular activities! This big child here was devastated at the thought of missing out on the annual Christmas get together with Mr Jazzy and some ex-work colleagues.

It really was looking like I wouldn't get to go and then I decided at the last minute sod that... I'm going.

So I did the only sensible thing and attired myself in Snow Boots and Sequins and off I went....

It was a great night, as usual. I really love this event. If it wasn't for this night I would very rarely get an opportunity to catch up with these ex-work mates. You know you're amongst friends when you chat away as though you'd only seen them a day ago. A very intelligent and hard working bunch. Any Government worth it's salt would consult with these coal-face people when considering any Public sector reform. And that's a fact.

Oh yes.... 'twas a great night alright. And Jazzy here had the hangover (from Hell) to prove it. I really should listen to Mr Jazzy when he tries to make me go for the last bus home...... *snigger*!!

We also had the opportunity to go see the Irish  Movie Premiere of  Tron Legacy  last Wednesday! How excited were we?! It was great.... fantastical in fact. These type of movies are not my cup of Barry's Gold Label usually but the Special Effects were truly amazing. I sat open mouthed for some of the sequences. It is a Gamer's delight as they Live The Dream Game. Oh... and the music is great too. Daft Punk is not something I normally go for either but it really is well suited to this movie.

The Jazzy's thoroughly enjoyed this movie and major thanks to Disney and Whizz Kids for giving us this opportunity. I rarely win prizes but was delighted I won this one.

Then on Saturday we had WiiBoy's purple belt testing for Taekwondo. Wow! He was fantastic! Yes, he struggled a wee bit with the Gross Motor skills required to precisely execute the one-step and fighting techniques but he still did good. What totally blew me away though was the power and strength he displayed when he performed his Pattern. Wow. And he never forgot his yes ma'm or yes sir as is expected of them. Unfortunately he didn't know the answer to the theory question he was asked but I'm hopeful that it won't go against him.

Oh, I really hope he's successful..... he so deserves it. He practiced so hard for it.

We were at the school from 10.30am until 12.45pm for the test. We had a quick lunch then back to the school for panto dance rehearsals at 2.00pm. I told him I'd go easy on him and the others who had tested but you should have seen him at that rehearsal. He danced his little legs off. A real trooper, I am so proud of him :-)

And this week was  rounded off  with a visit to our Shankill Christmas Festival in the Village. Such a lovely atmosphere as we all mingled in the village sipping Gluwein, chatting and listening to some live performances. Including some carol singers....

Hang on..... who's that in the orange hoodie...facing the wrong way?

And there he is again.... more interested in his lollipop!

And messing with his best friend!!

Oh, they are a pair of monkeys so they are!! They had great fun though..... and that's what it's all about.

Making memories....

And so we carry on, muddling through very busy times and making plans for what I hope is a lovely Christmas for everyone.

The big child in me is again at work, decorating the tree and Tinsel-izing everything that stands still!

I LOVE Christmas, really I do. It's just the hard work I'm not too fond off!

Sure, I'll just sit back and enjoy our tree and all will be well.

Only 11 days to go.....

Take care and be safe....
